I think you nailed it with this one. God for anyone beginning their journey with therapy. Or anyone in the middle of it really. Maybe the only thing I would add, unless I missed it, which is entirely possible, is how important the fit is. Even a good therapist might not be the right therapist. I feel like this would be a helpful guide for anyone interested in exploring what therapy can do for them.
Absolutely true. I think that I said that, but maybe not clearly enough. So much to cover!!! The fit is extremely important. It it isn't a good fit, it won't be good therapy.
Excellent article, Christine! I think you touch on so many important elements of therapy that are often ignored, e.g. having clear goals and incorporating the expectations and aspirations of the client. Perhaps the only add (and this is somewhat covered by your points re training) would be, therapists can’t be very successful if they try to solve all problems for everyone. There’s a need for specialists and deep expertise in certain fields to truly help, and do it in reasonable timeframe.
100% agree. Find your niche in terms of expertise. I have changed mine over the years, but have always tried to specialize so that I can offer the best possible treatment. You can't possibly stay up to date and effective for all issues and with all approaches. I would also add that I have never solved someone else's problem. I am just a guide. I want to empower them to solve their own problems. I offer support, information, perhaps some guidance and resources on top of compassion.
This is a well written article. I wish everyone seeking therapy could read it before they select a therapist. I'm looking forward to reading additional articles you write on this topic. Thanks for sharing.
Great article.
nicely written
Great reminder that not all therapy is good therapy… but there are good ones out there who can really help! You just need to know what to look for.
Absolutely! It can be incredibly helpful if you find the right fit.
